About Endocarditis

Endocarditis is an infection of the endocardium , which is the inner lining of your heart chambers and heart valves.It is rare condition.Endocarditis may develop slowly or suddenly, depending on what germs are causing the infection and whether you have any underlying heart problems.

Causes and Risk of Endocarditis

  1. having poor oral hygiene
  2. using a contaminated needle
  3. Sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia or gonorrhea
  4. prolonged time inserted urinary Catheters
  5. Congenital heart defects
  6. history of endocarditis

Symptom of Endocarditis

  1. Fever
  2. Heart murmur(New or changed)
  3. Bleeding under the fingernails or toe nails
  4. Chest pain when you breath
  5. Coughing
  6. Aching joints and muscles
  7. Shortness of breath
  8. Night sweats
  9. Swollen feet, legs, or abdomen
  10. Blood in the urine
  11. Fatigue
  12. Weight loss

 

Diagnosis of Endocarditis

  1. Blood tests 
  2. Echocardiogram
  3. Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  4. Chest X-ray
  5. Cardiac computerized tomography (CT) scan
  6. Cardiac MRI

Treatment of Endocarditis

Antibiotics

If your endocarditis is caused by bacteria, it will be treated with antibiotic (intravenous)  therapy.

Surgery

If the endocarditis has damaged the heart, surgery may be necessary. Surgery is recommended if  heart valve is so damaged that it does not close tightly enough, and regurgitation occurs and antibiotic therapy doesn’t work.
