About Heart Failure

Heart failure is a condition in which the heart can’t pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs. It’s sometimes called congestive heart failure, although this name is not widely used nowadays.It is differ from heart attack( It is death of heart muscle due to the blockage of a coronary artery).

Heart failure does not mean your heart has stopped working but it efficiency decrease(pumping the blood).

Causes and Risk factors of Heart Failure

  1. Older age
  2. Obesity
  3. Smoking
  4. Anemia (a deficiency of red blood cells)
  5. Diabetes ( especially diabetes type 2)
  6. Thyroid disease(Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism )
  7. Myocarditis (Inflammation of the heart muscle)
  8. Heart arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms)
  9. Atrial fibrillation ( irregular rapid heart beat)
  10. Coronary artery disease and heart attack
  11. High blood pressure (hypertension)
  12. Cardiomyopathy (Damage to the heart muscle )
  13. Certain medications
  14. Emphysema (difficulty in breathing due to lungs ).

 Symptoms of Heart Failure

  1. Shortness of breath or trouble breathing
  2. Fatigue (tiredness)
  3. Swelling in the ankles, feet, legs, abdomen, and veins in the neck
  4. A persistent cough, which may be worse at night and  wheezing
  5. Loss of appetite
  6. Fast heart rate and  fluttering or irregular heart beat
  7. Weight gain or weight loss
  8. Confusion,dizziness and fainting.

Diagnosis of Heart Failure

  1.  Blood and urine tests
  2.  Chest X-ray
  3.  ECG (electrocardiogram)
  4.  Echocardiogram
  5.  Stress test
  6.  Cardiac MRI 
  7.  Cardiac CT  scan
  8.  B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) blood test
  9. Angiogram (coronary catheterization).

 Treatment of Heart Failure

1) Medications

  1. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors
  2. Angiotensin II receptor blockers
  3. Beta blockers
  4. Diuretics
  5. Other medicine

2) Medical Devices

  1. Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs)
  2. Ventricular assist devices (VADs)

3) Surgery

  1. Coronary bypass surgery
  2. Heart valve repair or replacement
  3. Heart transplant
